AHIF launching new Emotional Regulation Skills Group
What is it?
Based on new research from doctors at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, this is a group designed to teach survivors of TBI about regulating emotions. After a head injury, people may see a change in their ability to respond to emotions—especially unpleasant ones, such as anger or sadness. This group teaches people how to identify emotions, think through their responses to situations, and implement changes in their lives to better cope with unpleasant feelings. Mount Sinai is proud to be a national leader in the field of brain injury rehabilitation. “Our excellence in clinical care and research is reflected in our designation as a Model System for Brain Injury since 2007, one of only 16 such programs that exist nationwide.” This therapy is provided from Mount Sinai to AHIF clinicians as part of a research study for TBI recovery. Registration ends January 31, 2024. Contact Katie at [email protected]. |
Details:
This group is a new type of therapy for TBI from New York, and it is being provided to AHIF clients free of charge for those who are qualified! The initial group will be limited to 6 participants, though there may be other opportunities for participation for those who are not accepted into the pilot group. (The reason for the limited number is because the group is part of a research study. Participants’ identifying information will not be used for research purposes.)

What Is AHIF's Mental Health Counseling Program?
In speaking with both clients and caregivers, AHIF recognized the tremendous need that both of these unique populations had for mental health counseling services. In the majority of cases, these services were either not available, or not affordable, in their community. In 2019, AHIF began a partnership with Katie Bee Counseling to provide vouchers for free counseling to those who needed it. As soon as we implemented this program, we recognized immediately that the demand far exceeded the capacity we had created.
In 2020, we brought Katie Beaugez on staff part-time to help address this need, and in 2021 Katie shifted to full-time employment with AHIF. Together with several other certified AHIF staff, and the upcoming arrival of counseling interns, AHIF continues to expand this service offering to clients and caregivers struggling with the often extreme challenges and emotions of living with a TBI, as well as caring for someone who is living with a TBI. |
