How did I go from loving Scott Joplin to absolutely hating him? The answer is one I don't like to acknowledge, but cannot escape...I got old! For those of you wondering who Scott Joplin is...he is the writer of the piano song "The Entertainer," now forever linked with an iconic summer phenomenon...the Ice Cream Truck. As a kid, there was nothing more exciting than the disruption to a hot summer afternoon than hearing that song, blaring at an insane decibel level, when the ice cream man entered your neighborhood. With anxious anticipation, you begged your parents to let you get ice cream and ran down the driveway to flag him down and enjoy some frozen goodness. Today, it is different. It is with dread that I hear that song, followed by the sound of feet running down the stairs for one of a very few things that can tear my kids away from their electronic devices. Of course, I rarely have cash anymore, so my wife and I have had to start keeping a cash stash in the kitchen for just these purposes, knowing of course that we could buy a box of fix of any popsicle they offer on the truck for what the ice cream man will gouge us for...but after all...it is all about the experience, right? So, I purchased an orange push-up, knowing that whatever this orange substance truly was (ice cream, sherbet, etc.) it would be capable of giving me what I was seeking...another Brain Freeze!
